11 Day Crate Training Course
You can do this course over 11 days. Some dogs or older puppies may be able to proceed very quickly and can be crate trained in as little as one weekend. But if your dog is skittish, or you are undoing some bad crate training, finishing the steps included here could take nearly a month. It depends on your dog.
Patience is key -- giving your dog an extra day or so to adjust to a certain step will save you MUCH more time than pushing your dog forward when they are not ready because you will just be creating a problem that you will have to undo later.
Day 8: Slowly extend how long the dog is in the crate with the door closed
Continue this step of letting the dog into the crate and closing the door for just a moment, very, very slowly extending the amount of time the dog is in the crate with the door closed. You should do this at least ten times with the door closed for no more than five seconds, and that's with you building up over time.
Only extend the time if the dog seems calm and completely comfortable. If he does, then slowly start increasing the time in his crate with the door closed, but only about five seconds at a time. Try stepping away from the crate a few feet, then coming right back and letting him out. The dog should be able to see you at all times.
