11 Day Crate Training Course

You can do this course over 11 days. Some dogs or older puppies may be able to proceed very quickly and can be crate trained in as little as one weekend.

If your dog is skittish, or you are undoing some bad crate training, finishing the steps included here could take nearly a month. It depends on your dog.

Patience is key -- giving your dog an extra day or so to adjust to a certain step will save you MUCH more time than pushing your dog forward when they are not ready because you will just be creating a problem that you will have to undo later.

Day 1: Get a crate

Day 2: Set up the crate

Day 3: Let your dog check out the crate on his own

Day 4: Introduce the dog to the crate

Day 5: Get the dog to start ducking into the crate for treats

Day 6: The dog goes all the way into the crate

Day 7: Close the door of the crate for just a moment

Day 8: Slowly extend how long the dog is in the crate with the door closed

Day 9: Have the dog in the crate with the door closed for 10 minutes

Day 10: Leave the room with the dog in the crate and the crate door closed

Day 11: Leave the room for 20 minutes with the crate door closed
