How to Potty Train your Dog

When you first get a puppy there is all the excitement and happiness until he makes his first accident. Then you have to focus on house breaking the dog and teaching where it can and more importantly where it cannot do its business. There are several different methods; there are those for outside and those for inside.

One of the best ways to potty train your dog to go outside is the crate method. You start your dog on a schedule that will help it adjust to the new environment. A recommended house breaking schedule would be 4 hours in the crate and then a supervised free-time. The free-time will give you and your dog bonding time and during that time you take him out and let him do his business.

If you have a lot of free-time then a good method would be just to keep your dog near you on a leash. Then while you're watching TV or reading take him out every 30 minutes and let him do his business. This is especially helpful for younger dogs because then you are going out enough to teach him where to go.

If you don't have room in your neighborhood for a specific potty place, then it may be easier to use the potty training pads for dogs. These are useful for teaching your dog to go in certain area of your choice located in your house. You will use the same methods however, instead of taking your dog outside then you will take him to where you have placed the pad.

A big part in house training your dog is rewarding him every time he does something right. You should give him a treat every time he urinates in the appropriate place. Reward is great because then your dog knows that what he is doing is correct and a repeatable behavior. So whenever you take your dog out, and he does it right, give him a treat.

A problem that often occurs is submissive urinating. Everyone leaves the house on a daily basis and when you come back your dog is always there to meet you. Some dogs lack self confidence and their way of showing that you are in control is urinating when you get home and greet them.

The best way to cure this is when you enter the room and your dog goes, you must leave the room and greet the dog again. This means he will be dry and you will have greeted him properly. Also, don't make such a fuss coming in the door; he is already very excited to see you.

These are all great ways to potty train your dog, which one you would like to use depends entirely on your schedule and ability to train the dog. Remember to never discipline your dog if he goes inside the house, just take him outside and try not to be angry. House breaking your dog can go by quickly and easily if you know what you are doing.
